Мутации обратные, реверсионные м. — мутации уже измененного ранее аллеля с возвратом экспрессии дикого типа. М. о. чаще всего доминантные, и обратное мутирование, или реверсия, выражается формулой a →→ A. Наличие спонтанных или индуцированных М. о. служит доказательством того, что прямая мутация явилась следствием изменения генного материала, а не его потери, при М. о. происходит снятие действия прямой мутации, инактивировавшей ген. Различают М. о.
а) истинные, восстанавливающие исходную последовательность нуклеотидов, и
б) вторичные, когда эффект прямой мутации компенсируется мутацией в др. части гена. Тип М. о. oпределяют методом анализирующих скрещиваний.
